Konitsa
Konitsa is 64 km from the capital of Epirus, Ioannina. Just a few kilometers from the villages of western Zagori and from the Greek-Albanian border is the beautiful town of Konitsa. Built amphitheatrically on the slope of Mount Trapezitsa, Konitsa is one of the most beautiful towns in the region with countless natural beauties. The impressive gorge of the Aoos river, the plain of the area where the Voidomatis and Sarantaporos rivers meet the Aoos on its journey to the Adriatic sea and the highest and most characteristic peak of Tymfi, Gamila (2497m.) create unique images. Its trademark is the imposing single-arched stone bridge, 19.25m high, which has been standing tall since 1869.On the back side of Konitsa are “hidden” and “forgotten” the villages of Lakka Aou (Elefthero, Palioseli, Pades, Armata, Distrato). Built amphitheatrically on the southern slopes of Smolikas, the 2nd highest mountain in Greece (2637m.) and overlooking the wild ridges of Tymfi as well as the gorge of the Aoos River, they form a remote but such an authentic part of the area away from the crowds of visitors.
