Ioannina
The largest city and capital of Epirus is the city of Ioannina. It is located in the northwestern part of the country, in the center of a valley among huge mountains. The town is built on the shores of a magnificent lake at an altitude of 480m, just an hour from the sunny beaches of the Ionian. It was built on the famous Egnatia Odos, the road connecting Europe with Asia, one of the oldest routes in history, once used by the Persians and the ancient Greeks.
Today, the city has a population of about 130,000 people. There are countless historical monuments and many museums. The most important attractions of the city are the Castle and the castle town with the acropolis of Its Kale dominating, as well as Lake Pamvotida with its islet. An inseparable part of Ioannina is the university with approximately 35,000 students from all parts of Greece.
